Les évêques- et les aumôniers nationaux responsables de la pastorale universitaire ont été invités les 25-27 septembre dernier à Porto pour faire le point du pèlerinage susmentionné du 6 au 12 juillet à Rome. Le Saint Père, Benoît XVI, dans son adresse au Vatican avait en effet exhorté les jeunes à oser faire l’expérience d’une rencontre intime, mystique pourrait-on dire, avec la personne du Jésus-Christ, comme l’avaient fait les disciples d’Emmaüs après la mort du Seigneur sur la croix. Cet étranger qu’ils rencontrent sur la route, reprenant des passages de la Bible qui traitaient de la venue d’un Messie, leur rendit à nouveau confiance, espoir, oui, enthousiasme même: « Notre cœur ne brulait-il pas en nous lorsqu’il nous parlait en marchant ? ». Et c’est finalement pendant le repas du soir à la bénédiction et au partage du pain, qu’ils reconnurent enfin la présence vivante de Jésus ressuscité !

Faire une évaluation du pèlerinage des étudiants à Rome de juillet 2009 était le tout premier objectif de la rencontre de Porto.

• Un exemplaire du précédent AUGUSTINUS (XXX°2009-3) fut remis à chacun. S’y trouvent le très beau discours du Saint-Père aux jeunes (p.5-7), suivi de réflexions de jeunes sur la question de savoir comment témoigner de sa foi chrétienne au sein de l’université dans le monde d’aujourd’hui suivant les directives des accords de Bologne (p.8-15). Ces textes rédigés par les étudiants eux-mêmes sont très révélateurs d’un grand désir d’approfondir sa foi également au plan rationnel pour qu’on sache comment en parler dans un milieu hautement intellectuel et scientifique.
• Mais il n’empêche que la majorité des étudiants étaient d’avis que vivre sa foi est plus important que d’en discuter3.
• L’importance d’une aumônerie au sein de l’université fut également considérée comme primordiale en tant que lieu où on peut rencontrer un ‘petit coin de ciel’ c'est-à-dire : une communauté d’amis où on peut expérimenter aussi bien la joie d’être ensemble que l’appui mutuel, l’échange fraternel des idéaux que l’on aime se confier mutuellement et, last but not least, une communauté ecclésiale qui aiment se retrouver pour ensemble prier le Seigneur et partager son pain eucharistique.
• Deux regrets ont été énoncées :

Le second objectif était d’apprendre des uns et des autres les différentes situations des aumôneries dans les 34 pays représentés à la réunion et de rechercher ensemble les adaptations nécessaires pour une pastorale plus efficiente à chaque cas concret.
Voici les portraits de quelques intervenants :

L’évêque auxiliaire de Porto Monseigneur Joao Lavrador prêchant l’homélie au cours de l’eucharistie qu’il a présidé le 25 septembre 2009 a tenu entre autres les idées suivantes (en Italien) :

“La Chiesa attraverso gli ultimi Papi, sopratutto Giovanni Paolo II e Benedetto XVI chiamal’attenzione per la necessità di evangelizazione delle persone che compongono il mondo universitaro.

Questo corrisponde ad una attitudine di dialogo in un ambiente dove l’intelligenza umana cosi sazia de scoprire nuove mette scientifiche etecnologische ha bisogno di essere informata su la vera Sapienza che soltanto il Vangelo puo offrire.

Ricordiamo quelle che Benedetto XVI ha affermato nella sua ultima enciclica: ‘La ragione ha sempre bisogno di essere purificata dalla fede’ et a sua volta ‘la religione ha sempre bisogno di essere purificata della ragione per mostrarre il suo autentico volto umano. La rottura di questo dialogo comporta un costo molto gravoso per lo sviluppo della umanita.(CV,56)

Ci troviamo ad affrontare uno degli aspetti pui difficili della pastorale, pui esigente, pui interpellante ma allo stesso tempo anche la pui necessaria ed urgente......

La presenza di Dio in mezzo del progresso culturale e della ragione umana saziando l’inteligenza all’amore, alla belezza, al bene e alla verita che Benedetto XVI riconosce come necessaria al mondo di oggi quando afferma: ‘La religione cristiana e le altre religioni possono dare il suo contributo per lo sviluppo se Dio trova posto anche nella sfera pubblica’. (CV,56)
 
Se tutta l’attivita pastorale della Chiesa richiede persone, discepoli di Gesu Cristo veramente conscienti della sua profonda ed intima relazione con il Mestre, questa che vi occupa, la pastorale universitaria, per tutte le sue carateristiche singulari lo esige di un modo molto pui rilevante.

Tuta la formazione cristiana di quelli che lavorano apostolicamente in questo campo esige une riposta vitale e seria, di compromesso a questa dupla questione com la quale Gesu Cristo interpela gli apostoli: ‘Chi dicono le moltitudine che io sono? E voi qui dite qui sono?’

La prima domanda mette il Cristiano in contatto com il mondo attorno a lui in un modo cosi ampio que lo rende capace di conoscere tutte le possiblilita e allo stesso tempo gli ostacoli che interferiscono nell’evangelizazione.

La secunda domanda suo turno, richiede le professione di fede in Gesu Cristo attraverso la quale dona la sua vita al Maestro e riconosci attraverso di Lui il Logos presente in tutta la creazione e sa che il Vangelo non é soltanto preceptibile dal essere umano ma é anche assolutamente necessario per ricondurre la creazione alla sua originale realta, liberta dal male e dal peccato.

Percio riguardo la vera evangelizazione questa seconda domanda e la risposta che viene di conseguenza si completerrano soltanto con la centralita del Mistero Pasquale di Gesu Cristo attraverso il quale l’evangelizzatore dovra confrontare la sua esistenza. Percio anche per noi oggi la prima questione e l’esigenzadi una riposta sul nostro mondo; per noi oggi la seconda domanda  e l’esigenza di una riposta nella scoperta crescente di una fede clara sensa compromisso ed é anche per noi oggi il confronto del Mistero Pasquale di Cristo presente permanentemente nella storia.  

Questo incontro riflette pa presenza della Chiesa nelle universita europeie.

Vi ricordo l’appelo che Giovanni Paolo II ha fatto attraverso la sua esortazione Post Sinodale: « Ecclesia in Europa » quando afferma che : ‘L’Europa ha bisogno di una dimensione religiosa. Per essere nuova (...) l’Europa si deve lasciare penetrare della azione di Dio’ (n° 116). E pui avante presenta il contributo della Chiesa Catolica dicendo: ‘la Chiesa cattolica puo dare un contributo unico per l’edificazione di una Europa aperta al mondo. Dalla Chiese cattolica deriva un modelo di unicita essenziale nella diversita di espressioni culturale, la conscienza di appartenere ad una communita universale che prende radici ma non finisci nelle communita locale, la senzasione che quello che unisce é molto di pui di quelle che separa” (n°116). Per questo il Papa sottolinea la necessaria presenza di cristiani con una adequata formazione competente nei vari campi ed instituzioni...

E interpellando le universita Giovanni Paolo II dice che: ‘in modo particolare va valorizzato il contributo dei cristiani che conducano la recerca e insegnano nelle Universita: con il ‘servizio del pensiero’ essi tramandono alle nuove generazioni i valori di un patrimonio culturale arrichito da due milleni di esperienza umanistica e cristiana, chiedo pure che nelle diverse Chiese particolari venga promossa una adeguata pastorale universitaria, favorendo in tal modo cio risponde alle attuali necessita culturali”. Questo modo in quale il Papa si riferisce alla pastorale universitaria richiede la presenza die sacerdoti, die religiosi e di laici ognuno con la sua responsabilita e caracteristiche proprie. Ma sottolinio l’importanza dei laici che inseriti nel mondo academico essendo conscienti dell’importanza del testemugno della sua fede si preparano cosi come esperiennza di Chiesa ad evangelizare il mondo del pensiero. In piu permettettime che sottoligni l’importanza di proporzionare una formazione che passa non soltanto per i contenuti maa anche per le strategie e mezzi che sono ugualmente di carattere rilevanti...”

REPORT OF SECIS’ BOARD IN BRUSSELS (13/11/2009)

1.Were present:

• The chairman: Father Charles de Hemptinne,
• The vice-president and secretary: Herman Weber
• The treasurer: Father Pierre Devos, s.j.
• The honorary member and vice-treasurer: J.C van Caloen

2.The board confirmed that next general meeting will take place in NAMUR (Facultés Universitaires Notre Dame de la Paix4) from Thursday the 8th up to Saturday July the 10th 2010.

3.Father Charles who begins his 76th year of age on 15/11/2009, asks to pass the SECIS torch to someone else. The board has been discussing about possible candidates who could be proposed to the general assembly of July 2010.

4.The treasurer and Mr. Jean-Charles van Caloen exposed the financial situation of SECIS. No special problems:

• The membership fee = 150 Euro
• The general assembly = 100 Euro
• The yearly rent that we have to pay up to now for the SECIS office = 1.600 Euro

5.Most people of the board had not been aware that last AUGUSTINUS (Nr. 118) had given in September 2009 the official report of 2009 meeting in Bonn. That information + the points that had to be discussed in Brussels could be found as well in that AUGUSTINUS nr. 118  as on SECIS website: (www.secis.be)!

6.The proposed topic for the SECIS general meeting has been slightly adapted and formulated as such: “Language of faith and language of sciences, a challenge for international students in a market driven society”.

7.Schedule of time of the encounter:

• Thursday evening: statutory matters of SECIS non profit association
• Friday: round table with members and invited guests about above mentioned topic that had been introduced by specialists.   

8.Last but not least: Please send an e-mail as soon as you can to Father Pierre Devos (Pierre.devos@fundp.ac.be) so that he could prepare the meeting in due time… and also suggest some sightseeing tour for those who have time to enjoy the beautiful city and the surrounding nature!

Compte-Rendu du  bureau du SECIS à Bruxelles le 13/11/09

La prochaine assemblée générale se tiendra à Namur (FUNDP) du jeudi 8 au samedi 10 juillet 2010.

Il faudra à cette occasion, en conformité avec les statuts de l’association, élire un nouveau président (notre président actuel, le chanoine Charles de Hemptinne fête ses 75 ans ce 15 novembre 2009) et intégrer une nouvelle personne au bureau. On réfléchit aux candidats éventuels. On souhaite aussi un heureux anniversaire au président.

La situation des comptes est présentée. Les seules entrées sont constituées par la cotisation de 150 euros que paie chaque membre puisqu’aucune aide n’est accordée par l’Eglise à ce service des églises européennes pour les étudiants internationaux.

On examine la liste actuelle des membres et on se met d’accord sur la manière d’initier et de renouer des contacts avec certains pays. Charles de Hemptinne et Hermann Weber se chargent des  démarches à effectuer à ce propos.

Un site web ( www.secis.be ) géré par le Prof. Em. Xavier de Hemptinne a le grand mérite d’exister. On examine comment faire pour le rendre plus interactif. La question demande à être creusée. On pourrait par exemple y intégrer une « newsletter ». Chaque membre du SECIS devait y participer en envoyant des articles au bureau à Bruxelles.

Le thème de la prochaine assemblée générale  est formulé de la façon suivante :
“Language of faith and language of sciences, a challenge for international students in a market driven society “. La soirée du jeudi serait consacrée aux aspects statutaires. On propose qu’une table ronde, ouverte à un public extérieur (invité), soit organisée au cours de la journée du vendredi sur le thème choisi. Un intervenant extérieur pourrait développer le point de vue pastoral et un autre le point de vue scientifique.
Pour des raisons d’organisation pratique, il sera demandé aux membres de l’association de signaler à Pierre Devos (pierre.devos@fundp.ac.be) s’ils comptent participer ou non à l’assemblée de juillet 2010.

SECIS AS URGENT SERVICE RECOGNIZED BY CCEE AS A LINK WITH WHOM THEY ARE IN CONTACT
AND WHO IS IN COMMUNICATION WITH THEM

The “Service of European Churches for International Students” (SECIS) is an International non profit association with the following social aims:

In general: to promote and support the activities of the chaplaincies, the creation of scholarships, reception, formation, guidance and return assistance for the students and international research workers in the European countries in the spirit of the social principles taught by the Catholic Church assisting therefore in particular those who are most involved in development projects.

The pursued activities are the following:

• organizing at least once a year a gathering on themes of common interest,
• exchanging information regarding the situation of the international students in the different counties and the various activities of the association members,
• constituting documentations on the subject of pastoral and social care for international students,
• publishing a bulletin (for instance AUGUSTINUS + website: www.secis.be),
• representing the members at international organizations in order to give notice of the views of the Church, especially concerning the students from developing countries,
• presenting these questions to Church organizations,
• co-ordinating the activities of the Church in the international area of the universities,
• co-operating with other international organizations,
• promoting common projects in favor of international students, concerning their guidance, mainly on pastoral level , in a spirit of inter-religious dialogue and intercultural exchange. These projects can also concern the reintegration of the international students in their country of origin after achievement of their studies

The International Student Chaplaincy offers hospitality to students from all countries who study in the Netherlands regardless of their cultural and religious background.

Several pastors of the Protestant and Catholic churches work as chaplains with the international students in different towns. In some places local committees coordinate the activities of the ISC.

The aim of the International Student Chaplaincy is to increase the spiritual, social and physical wellbeing of the international students so that their time in the Netherlands is a fruitful time for themselves and their communities.

The activities cover a wide range including personal counselling, Sunday worship, meals together with comrades, cross-cultural evenings, interfaith sharing, excursions, retreats, bible study, and conferences.

In this way, the International Student Chaplaincy offers to students:

• a home away from home;
• companionship on the road of life;
• inspiration for personal growth;
• possibilities to cross borders of denominations, religions and cultures;

Willem I, Koning der Nederlanden, kende aan de Universiteit Gent een wapen toe (K.B. van 23 december 1817).
In het wapenregister van de Hoge Raad van Adel te ‘s Gravenhage wordt dit officiëel beschreven:
Het schild bestaat uit twee delen. Het schildhoofd, de zilveren leeuw, zou het deels bedekte wapen van Gent zijn. De leeuw in het wapen van de stad Gent draagt evenwel een lint met kruis. Het ontwerp uit de jaren 1960, vertoont enkele afwijkingen t.o.v. van de officiele beschrijving.
Het onderste deel van het schild toont Minerva ( = Griekse godin Athena), godin van wijsheid en kennis, beschermster van kunst, wetenschap en handwerk.

Op haar helm is een uil (?) te zien. Zij wordt geflankeerd door een oranjetak links, toespeling op het toenmalige vorstenhuis, en een lauriertak rechts, zinnebeeld van vrede en overwinning. Het devies is ‘inter utrumque’ (= tussen beide): “verwerven van wijsheid en wetenschap (Minerva) staat centraal en kan slechts in een sfeer van vrede en geluk (laurier)” en met de steun van vorst en vaderland (oranjetak). Na onze pelgrimstocht naar Rome zou ik volgende symboliek suggereren: Minerva (godin van wijsheid en kennis) wordt maar echt wijs wanneer zij blijft steunen zowel op positieve wetenschappen, onderzoek en moderne techniek als op humane en geestelijke deugden als hoop, trouw, gedienstigheid, geloof en liefde.

Dear students, let me end with a few words in English.   

It’s true of course that I am not so young any more.
The children you may have call me with affection: “grand-father” or in Chinese = “yéyé”.

But don’t be afraid of what I will say now as an elderly, wise man!

1. Some years ago, it was in the eighties, I made a nice baby boy and gave him the name: OBSG.
He grew under my control up to the time that he felt that as young adult man he could do all right a lot of practical material things but that the feminine side of life was somewhat lacking for him. So I advised my young adult boy to look for a nice girl who could help him socialize his life a bit, bringing in his life more culture, more beauty, more tenderness, more sympathy and true love of course!

2. At last, it was the first of November 1998, he found that precious treasure. So precious indeed that he asked even to the Rector of Ghent University, Professor Dr. De Leenheer at that time, to preside to his marriage and to entrust publically to his beloved fiancée the keys of “Club Van Eyck”: Elisa’s dancing and singing academy.

3. It was a beautiful marriage indeed. The brides had of course to adapt to each other a little while. But it succeeded brilliantly. They got many children, year after year. A large family it has become carrying all the same family name. What name, tell me? My grand-children are called: “STUDENTS’ WELCOME CLUB”, of course!

Well, our dear Rector Van Cauwenberge has come today to give the honorary medal not only to me, the “yeye – grandfather” but also and mainly to my big boy OBSG, to his wife, my daughter in law, Club Van Eyck, and last but not least to all my grand-children of the “STUDENTS’ WELCOME CLUB”. By this honorary medal the Rector wants to honor all of you from the “STUDENTS’ WELCOME CLUB, because you are truly, thanks to the appropriate studies you do at the UGent, the bright future of your home countries!

And I end my speech with words of thanks to all of you and
my best wishes for the coming feasts:

DECLARATION DE LA COMECE (ZENIT.org)

Le 1er décembre marque l'entrée en vigueur du Traité de Lisbonne. Outre la réforme des Institutions de l'UE, le Traité introduit dans le droit primaire de l'UE un article d'une importance considérable pour les Eglises. Par l'article 17 du Traité sur le fonctionnement de l'UE, l'UE reconnaît l'identité et la contribution spécifique des Eglises et mène sur cette base avec elles un dialogue « ouvert, transparent et régulier ».

En vertu de cet article, les Eglises et les Communautés religieuses vont pouvoir renforcer leur Dialogue avec la Commission, le Conseil et le Parlement européens et contribuer plus efficacement à la réflexion politique européenne.

Inspirées par la doctrine sociale de l'Eglise et fortes de leur expérience de terrain, les Eglises vont pouvoir mener un dialogue critique et constructif avec les décideurs européens sur les politiques élaborées par l'UE.

Aujourd'hui, à la veille d'une nouvelle décennie, ce sont les mêmes défis urgents qui préoccupent l'UE et les Eglises : La solidarité avec les plus faibles au sein de nos sociétés, l'Economie au service de l'Homme, la solidarité intergénérationnelle et avec les pays en voie de développement, les changements climatiques et la préservation de la Création, l'accueil des migrants et le dialogue interculturel.

Les Églises d'Europe accueillent donc volontiers le dialogue avec l'Union européenne comme un instrument qui leur permettra d'accompagner plus efficacement l'UE afin qu'elle devienne une Communauté de peuples et de valeurs, consciente de sa responsabilité, unie et accueillante.

Ces dernières années, un Dialogue de fait s'était mis en place entre les Institutions européennes et la COMECE et ses partenaires œcuméniques. Grâce à ce « Dialogue de fait », la confiance entre Institutions européennes et Eglises a grandi avec les années. La COMECE souhaite qu'il puisse désormais s'intensifier et s'approfondir, sur la base de l'article 17. Elle appelle les Eglises et les chrétiens à travers l'Europe à saisir cette opportunité de dialogue pour contribuer avec expertise et humanité au projet européen.

La COMECE fera prochainement avec ses partenaires œcuméniques de la KEK (Conférence des Eglises européennes) des propositions concrètes à la Commission européenne, au Parlement européen et au Conseil afin d'ancrer ce dialogue dans une pratique institutionnelle régulière.
Aujourd'hui aussi, Mgr J. De Kesel, évêque auxiliaire pour Malines-Bruxelles et délégué de la Conférence épiscopale auprès que de la « Commission des épiscopats de la Communauté européenne » (COMECE) souligne, dans le communiqué ci-dessus, la contribution du Traité de Lisbonne au « dialogue avec les religions et communauté philosophiques ».
